Female Hair Loss

Female Hair LossMany people assume that hair loss is only a problem suffered by men, but this is simply not true. Although men suffer from hair loss more frequently than women do, the effects of hair loss on women, especially the psychological effects, can be more severe. Society can be perceived to accept male hair loss more readily than female hair loss. If you’ve suffered with female hair loss in the past, or are starting to see the difference in your hair, you will probably notice that the amount of hair that you have gets less and less all over your scalp. However, it’s common for peoples hair at the front of their forehead to remain the same, or very similar to what it always was. Several years ago, it was thought that it was only men who suffer from hair loss as a result of testosterone, but female hair loss isn’t considered to be caused by an imbalance of testosterone.

When you’re experiencing female hair loss, it’s quite normal to feel annoyed that you have this condition when it’s rare, but this isn’t strictly the case. Believe it or not, a recent study showed that in or around 35 million people in America alone suffer from this condition. So never feel as if you’re the only one going through this, it’s more common than what most people think! There was also a time where people thought that female hair loss only happened when they reached a certain age around 45-55, but once again this was proven wrong. There has been many cases where young teenagers experience female hair loss for no apparent reason at all. Obviously sometimes female hair loss can occur due to huge amounts of stress, serious illness and so on. Another point to note is that you shouldn’t diagnose yourself with hair loss, even though you may think that you can tell if you suffer from hair loss, it’s not recommended to do this. You really should go to your local doctor and ask to go under several tests to see if you have a condition relating to hair loss, and if you end up being told that you do have such a condition, at least they can try to fix the problem before it gets worse.

There’s a few things that you should look out for before going to a doctor, and if you notice any of these I’d recommend that you get help with the problem :

1. Thin hair – It’s natural enough for your hair to get thinner as you get older, but if you see that your hair has got really thin over a short period of time, this should ring alarm bells in your head that you may be suffering from female hair loss. Most women wash their hair on a regular basis, and some of this products can thin hair, but they certainly shouldn’t thin your hair enough to get you worried about having a medical condition. In most cases, the back of your head should be the most important place to check, so always monitor the back of your head to see if you can notice any differences.

2. Hair loss – As I said previously, if the hair near your forehead remains the same as normal, but the rest of your hair starts to look different, there’s a high chance that you may be experiencing hair loss. The one positive of going through female hair loss is that usually females look after their hair more than males, and because of this they can notice a change before most males would. And as with any medical condition, the earlier you realise that you have the condition, the more chance there is that you can fix it or prevent it from getting any worse in the future.

That’s just two things that you should be aware of among several others. The most important thing is to act as quickly as possible, the faster you notice the hair loss, the better. Don’t be afraid to go to the doctor in case that you’re told that there’s nothing wrong with your hair. It’s better to be safe than sorry as the old saying goes, so if you have any doubt at all, consult a professional as soon as possible.
